The "Reidsville Rocket" Blast From The Rear To Victory Lane In The 200-Lap NASCAR Late Model Stock Event At Caraway Speedway

April 29, Asheboro, NC The prestigious Montgomery Motors 200 Lapper for the NASCAR Late Model Stocks, started off bad for Jason York, known as the Reidsville Rocket after official sent him to the rear after qualifying due to a tech problem, which had to be fixed before the event. Billy Hogan of Troy captured the pole award with a fast speed of 93.761 mph.

On the drop of the green flag, Buddy Allred of Randleman would take to the lead with Lexington€s Gene Kepley challenging him every lap. Finally on lap 30 Kepley relinquished Allred of the lead. Siler City€s Stephen Grimes would have his turn at the lead on lap 74, but Siler City€s Gary Causey would take over on lap 84. Grimes continued to work on Causey and grabbed the lead again on lap 138.

On lap 150 Grimes would slip up the track and spin giving Causey the lead on lap 151. York had worked his way from the rear to second and blasted past Causey on lap 168. He would go on to take home the victory. Steve Loftin of Thomasville, Causey, Kepley, Richard Landreth of Pine Hall, Keith Clapp of Asheboro, Brad Brinkley of Sanford, Allred, Nathan Buttke of Randleman and Jerry Burr of Asheboro rounded out the top ten finishers.

3-Gene Kepley
4-Buddy Allred
5-Ryan Zeck

Stephen Grimes worked his way from 9th to 3rd in 30 laps to be in position to capitalize on contact between leader Buddy Allred and Jason York. Grimes was then able to hold off 98 & 99 point champion Steve Loftin for his 2nd win of the 2000 season.

April 1st Notes

1: Stephen Grimes
2: Jason York
3: Brad Brinkley
4: Steve Loftin
5: Billy Hogan

95 & 97 track champion Stephen Grimes returned to Caraway's victory lane by getting by York with 3 laps to go as York's car faded.

After the re-draw for starting positions Grimes found himself 3rd behind the 87 Mark III financial car, with the 02 of Randy Benson 2nd, Brad Brinkley 4th, Nathan Butke 5th and Jason York(as a result of last weeks win) starting 6th, even though York had set the quick time in qualifying.

The inside line was held up by the 87 car early allowing Benson, Brinkley and York to get by. Brinkley was able to get by Benson resulting in Benson being freight trained on the outside. York disposed of Brinkley soon after to take over the top spot and Loftin had also gotten by Grimes.

York opened up a pretty decent lead while grimes worked on picking off Loftin then Brinkley. A caution on lap 38 allowed grimes to close in on york's bumper and the 2 pulled away from the field. York's car slowly began going away from him and with 3 to go grimes was able to sneak by, grimes got loose off four taking the white flag but it wasn't enough as he was able to hold off York for his first victory in the #57 Packaging Products/Autocraft/Cox Race engines/Pro-Parts Monte Carlo

Apparently Jay Hedgecock was injured in the modified race, i'm not sure how bad. hopefully someone will have some information.

"The Reidsville Rocket" Blasts To Victory Lane In The Season Opener

March 25, 2000 Asheboro, N.C. - A field of 23 NASCAR Late Model Stock cars were on hand to compete for the Dave's Discount Furniture Warehouse Season Opener 150. Todd Massey of Haw River, N.C., blistered the track with a 94.480 mph qualifying lap that put him on the pole. Former two time Limited Stock Champion Gary Causey of Siler City, N.C. would start along side of Massey with Troutman, N.C.'s Greg Marlowe and "The Riedsville Rocket" Jason York behind, respectively.

When the green flag waved signaling the start of the 150 lap race Massey breaks away from Causey and takes the lead and sets the pace for the field. Causey has no time to worry about the leader as York pours on the heat. The crowd jumps to their feet knowing the feud that boils between the two runs deep. York continues to work on Causey's bumper trying his best to get him loose. On lap 8 York sticks the bumper to Causey causing him to slid up turn four. York zooms by as Causey is hung out on the outside as several cars pass by he finally finds a whole and falls back to the fifth spot.

The battle behind Massey gave him about a five car length lead over the rest of the pack. York continues to run down the leader as another battle heats up behind him. On lap 18 York put the hammer down and took sole possession of the lead. On lap 34 Asheboro, N.C.'s Jerry Burr would bring at the first caution of the race with engine problems. This gets the field back together with York, Massey, Marlowe and Siler City N.C.'s Stephen Grimes, respectively awaiting the restart.

On the restart the top four would hold there positions. Marlowe continued to challenge Massey for second spot. After several laps of side by side racing Massey surrenders to Marlowe. As the race continues the top four break away from the rest of the field as York sets the pace. On lap 85 the caution is out for a rain shower. The rain continues to fall and the red flag is given. The field retreats down pit road and parks.

The track was dried out by the lower divisions and the race resumes. Grimes spins and falls back in the pack. Causey has battled his way back to third behind Marlowe. Randleman, N.C.€s Buddy Allred moves to fourth after battling lap after lap with Rockingham N.C.€s Randy Benson. On lap 110 Hartsville, S.C.'s Jody Lavender spins coming out of turn two bringing out the fourth caution of the night. On the restart Marlowe gives York several charges but is unable make the pass. Allred and Benson are still battling every inch of the way, giving the front three about a half a straight lead. Caution goes out again on lap 118 as Winston Salem, N.C.€s Tommy Neal spins on the backstraight. The pack is back together again and the battle is still between York ,Marlowe and Causey up front. Allred and Benson continue to battle for fourth and fifth with returning Track Champion Steve Loftin of Thomasville, N.C. right on there bumper.

Asheboro, N.C.'s Junior Cox begins to slow and smoke on lap 125 causing a chain reaction as the field bunches up. Neal and Cox make contact while Dan Moore of Bear Creek, N.C. and Billy Hogan of Troy, N.C. barely get through the mayhem bringing out the caution.

On the restart the battle heats up as rain threatens to fall. The field scrambles for positions as the first drops fall. The field begins to get impatient and wild as they know the rain will end the event. Grimes spins out of turn four as the caution is being waved for rain. On lap 138 of the 150 lap event the red flag is given as the rain pounds the track. The race was officially called and the victory was given to York. Causey who finished third and unhappy with York's aggressive driving, protested the crank shaft in York's car. After several hours of removing the motor to get the crank shaft out, Joe Collins of NASCAR found the crank shaft to be legal. Officially giving York the first victory of the season. Marlowe, Causey, Allred, Benson, Loftin, Gene Kepley of Lexington, N.C., Hogan, Keith Clapp of Asheboro, N.C. and Brad Brinkley of Sanford, N.C. rounded out the top ten finishers.

Due to the rain the supporting divisions did not get there races in but have been rescheduled. Coming up next Saturday Night will be the running of True Value Hardware Night featuring a 150 lap SMART Modified event, a 50 Lap NASCAR Late Model Stock event. Two 30 Lap Exide Shortrack Series Limited Stock events, two 20 lap Pure Stock events and Two 15 lap Accel Chargers Baby Grand Stock evnets. The Super Mini Trucks will not be competing this weekend but will make up there race in two weeks. Rain checks will not be honored. Grandstands open at 6PM. Pits and Backside at 2PM and the main event will get under way at 8PM. Directions: Take US 220 bypass to the Spero Road Exit and follow the signs.
